A2Q is an online music magazine targeted at Generation Z and above. Focusing on new and emerging music that cuts through the masses.

Created by myself and three friends, we each had set roles in the creation of this project. My role was Creative Director. Establishing the brand identity (logo, colours, typeface), tone of voice, design of assets, web design and everything else in between. Overall, I took a holistic approach and ensured every detail aligned to create a strong, memorable presence.
It all started with the name. We wanted it to be something common, but memorable. Something which you'd almost gloss over in your day to day activities. From this small brief we created a shortlist. Names such as "Play Next" or "Add to library" were pondered. Ultimately we landed on "Add 2 Queue". Derived from the Spotify's "Add to Queue" feature that many users use everyday. It was soon shortened to "A2Q".

Then there was the logo. I started by researching existing online magazines such as GQ, Highsnobiety, Rolling Stone, and i-D. From there, I got to work in Adobe Illustrator. Eventually landing on a square design with a page-turn tuck in the bottom right corner, with the letters A2 above and Q below.

I envisioned a logo that was versatile and unconfined. I wanted to be able to invert it, change the colours, remove the background, place it over textures all whilst maintaining its integrity. It was also essential that it looked nothing like the A24 logo due to the already similar name.
A large portion of my work was creating the website. I used Webflow which has more pros than cons, and I had a very clear idea of what I wanted the website to look and feel like. My self set criteria was that the website needs to be simple and efficient. Communicated through colours, and obvious button placements and three structured typefaces for headings, subheadings and body text, whilst keeping in mind website performance, gauged using Lighthouse.

Eye catching images showcasing the subject of a review, or of a topic were place at the top of sections to clearly separate text. And in page links help users to navigate quickly around the site (due to the limited number of pages the free version of webflow allows!).
The main challenges were time and gathering suitable assets. There were a lot of images to save down, and reformat etc. Then there was the actual building of the site itself.

Ensuring that there was a clear hierarchy in the navigator so that elements could be copied and reused no matter where on the site. Making sure all the spacing, font size, padding, dynamic elements, alignment etc was correct. Then there was translating that across to other devices such as mobile phones and tablets. All in all this was very time consuming. The content however, (fortunately written by my colleagues on this project) was simple to add.

Overall this project was a fun way us to express and do something that we're individually passionate about. We weren't looking to achieve any sort of viewership figure. Just create something that we're proud of. Create something that scratches a creative itch.
